Matt Brown does much more than just coach baseball.

The Sand Springs’ head coach also teaches AP Calculus.

Repetition and efficiency are keys for Brown when it comes to balancing a demanding school day schedule.

“It is just about making sure you’re working efficiently so that the AP Calc kids and the baseball kids are getting everything they need to help them be successful,” Brown said.

“The more you do it the more you learn to work efficiently, so you can do both jobs at a high level.”

Brown, who led the Sandites to a 29-9 record last season on the diamond, entered the teaching/coaching profession after being a graduate assistant at Oklahoma Christian University. The upcoming school year will be his eighth overall and seventh at Sand Springs.

“All my teachers and coaches in the past made it really clear you can be a part of who kids grow up to be.

That is something I take really seriously,” said Brown, who will be in his fifth year as the baseball head coach.

“I love the community around Sand Springs and how much we are supported by the town, and you can see that in every sport. Admin at CPHS are incredible and support all faculty/students in any way they need.”

Teaching calculus is a strategy tool that Brown feels is integral.

“In calculus, students learn how to take in information, formulate a strategy, and solve the problem. Then they learn how to persevere if their strategy doesn’t work the first time,” Brown said. “I think these are vital skills that they learn through the class.”

During his rare free time, Brown enjoys a number of activities away from his school/coaching life.

“My wife and I love to attend Oklahoma State football games. I like to play golf as well during late summer and fall when I have time. During the spring I pretty much do baseball all the time I’m in school,” he said.
