Deke Thompson – Sand Springs
When the Sandites and head coach Eric Savage take the court this season, it’s with the intention of making a deep run in the playoffs. One player the Sandites will lean on this season is Deke Thompson. Thompson will play point guard and shooting guard as a senior. Thompson said this team is capable of big things.
“This season our team can be really good if we all buy into winning, I feel like we can make a run to the state tournament,” said Thompson.
Thompson is a team guy and someone who pushes for their success regardless of their place on the team.
“The things I love the most about this team is that there isn’t really any egos I feel like we are all playing to win and we all have each other’s back,” Thompson said. “Definitely should watch #11 Kooper Kelly he can shoot the ball great, #23 Khalil Allen is improving his game every day, and he has crazy bounce, he dunks everything. Number 12 Kason Evans is a real aggressive big who can go and lastly #25 Blake Johnson another big we have who has a nice mid-range game and can finish through contact.”
The senior loves to play at home and is looking forward to competing against the Sandites Highway 97 rivals.
“Favorite place to play would be our home court. We have great fans, and the gym is just the right size where it can get real loud in there. I haven’t got to play in the rivalry game at Sand Springs yet, but I heard Sapulpa will be good so I’m excited for that,” said Thompson.
Finding inspiration is easy for Thompson. His family has been his biggest supporters and he knows they will always be there for him with words of encouragement.
“I would say the biggest influences in my life are my dad and my mom. They are always making sure I’m fed and have everything I need, and they push me to be the best version of me I could be. I wouldn’t trade them for the world,” said Thompson.
Recruiting for Thompson is picking up. It no wonder he has coaches at the next level paying him some attention. Last season Thompson averaged 19.4 points a game and is considered one of the top scorers in Class 6A. Thompson is focused on helping the Sandites make the most of every opportunity this season, but when the time comes, Thompson said he will be ready to play at the next level.
“I plan on playing college basketball after high school,” Thomson said. “Just not sure where I will play.” Whoever is lucky enough to land Thompson will have a player his teammates can count on and someone who will devote countless hours to improving his game and being prepared to step on the court when his number is called.
