Summer never really slows down for Charles Page High School softball player Lexi Penner. For the Sandites’ varsity pitcher, the break from school is just the starting line for another stretch of training and competition. “The day after the last day that school is out,” she said of when summer officially begins for her.
Even with a busy schedule, Penner makes time for simple summer fun. “Go swimming,” she said when asked about a must-do activity. But most days are built around getting better and staying ready for the next pitch. “Summer pride workouts, I play competitive ball with my travel team, and then start high school practices,” Penner said, laying out a routine that keeps her on the field and in the weight room.
Penner, a pitcher for Charles Page, understands the demands of her position and the work it takes to perform in the circle. “I play pitcher and the most difficult thing about pitching is all of the practice time put in behind the scenes,” she said. That preparation is a focus as she heads into her junior year. “This summer I’ve been working on commanding my pitches to improve my game,” Penner said, emphasizing control and consistency.
Inside the dugout, Penner is surrounded by teammates who bring energy and effort. She pointed to one player who sets the tone. “Lakelyn Harger is the loudest in the dugout and comes home with the dirtiest uniform,” Penner said, highlighting the vocal leadership and gritty play that help drive the team. Another teammate has made a lasting impact on her approach and mindset. “Bailey Copeland, she is funny and has a positive attitude,” Penner said.
As the new season approaches, Penner’s goals are clear and ambitious. “I hope we make it to state and win this year!” she said. Her message to the team matches that confidence with a sense of joy and togetherness. “Let’s go have fun and take state!” Penner said, capturing the blend of hard work and enthusiasm that defines Charles Page softball.
