Sand Springs High School sophomore Brighton Cole has learned that success in cheerleading comes from hard work, trust and a willingness to step outside of her comfort zone.
As a main base, Cole plays an important role in the team’s stunts, providing strength and stability while working closely with teammates. The position demands focus, communication and confidence, especially when routines become more difficult.
Cheer has also become an outlet for Cole to grow beyond the mat. “Cheer has taught me that I can’t let anxiety stop me from taking chances and having fun. It has also taught me how to have a good work ethic and to keep pushing myself even when things are hard,” Cole said.
That mindset is developed through a demanding year-round commitment. The work does not stop after the final competition or game of a season. “A lot, we start practice as soon as the previous season ends, including 6:00am workouts through the summer.”
Cole appreciates the commitment shared by everyone in the program. The group’s bond, she said, makes the demanding practices and performances more meaningful.
“My favorite thing about my team is our shared feelings of comradery, and the friendships we’ve built outside of the cheer gym that make us 10x better on the mat.”
Outside of cheer, Cole enjoys science classes, especially learning about the body and how it works. “My favorite subject in school would be anything science related, I really like my human body systems class.”
She also enjoys spending time away from school and athletics. Her interests include reading, fishing, painting and being with family. “I like to read, fish, spend time with my family, and paint,” Cole said.
Cole credits her mother as one of her greatest inspirations. “My mom inspires me because she always gives 100 percent effort and shows me what it’s like to truly have a servants heart.”
She also looks up to teammate Marlee Dixon, whose support has made a lasting impact. “Marlee has left an impression on me by always being there when I need help even outside of the cheer gym and being a role model athlete by giving 100 percent effort in everything, she does without ever complaining and instead encouraging,” Cole said.
Cole stays active in the Sand Springs community. Her family owns Sand Springs Nutrition, where she works, and she serves as a varsity helper for a fourth-grade youth team. She is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
Whether she is helping younger athletes, working at her family’s business or building confidence through cheer, Cole continues to pursue growth through effort, encouragement and service.
