Sand Springs High School junior Sawyer Briscoe approaches softball with confidence, resilience and an appreciation for the people around her.
Briscoe, a shortstop, said her parents are her biggest inspiration because of the example they set through hard work.
“My parents because they work hard for everything we have.”
That perspective has helped shape her approach both on the field and away from it. Briscoe said athletics has taught her an important lesson about facing difficult moments.
“It has taught me how to push through battles and overcome adversity.”
At shortstop, Briscoe handles one of the game’s most demanding defensive positions. The position requires range, quick decisions and responsibility on nearly every ball hit in the infield.
“Shortstop, the hardest thing is all the jobs at that position.”
When Briscoe steps into the batter’s box, she keeps her approach simple and focused.
“Be confident and look for my pitch.”
While the competition matters, Briscoe said the relationships built through softball are what make being part of the team meaningful.
“I love how all my teammates bond and love each other and always wanna be together.”
She also values the friendships made during the season, recognizing that those connections can last beyond the final out.
“The friendships I make along the way.”
A teammate who has made an impact is Lexi Penner. Briscoe said Penner’s encouragement and loyalty stand out.
“Lexi Penner has left an impression because she always is so encouraging, and we always have each other’s backs.”
Outside of softball, Briscoe enjoys relaxing, spending time outdoors and staying involved at school. Her favorite pastime combines both rest and activity.
“Taking a nap or being outside.”
She also values Sand Springs and its close-knit atmosphere.
“I love how small our community is yet it’s big, everyone knows each other.”
Briscoe remains active beyond the softball field through student council events and school spirit.
“I try and get involved in anything extra, such as STUCO activities, and I’m very involved in the student section.”
Whether she is fielding a ground ball at shortstop, supporting classmates or building relationships with teammates, Briscoe brings an encouraging, determined presence to Sand Springs. Her focus on confidence and perseverance reflects the qualities she hopes to carry long after her playing days.
